SOS Laundry for Singles: You Never Forget Your First Wash – Tips & Tricks – Soul’s Spirit by Elena Iollo

You finally have a place of your own. The keys are on the table, the fridge contains something vaguely edible, and no one asks what time you’ll be home.
La prima lavatrice da single

You’re independent.

Then it arrives.

The laundry basket.

At first, it looks harmless enough. Two T-shirts, a pair of jeans, a few socks.

Three days later, it has grown to alarming proportions.

The time has come for your first load of laundry as a single.

And suddenly you discover that being an adult isn’t just about paying the bills.

It’s also about knowing whether that red T-shirt can go into the washing machine with the white one.

Spoiler: sometimes it can’t.

First mistake: “I’ll just put everything in”

Whites, blacks, colours, towels, jeans, T-shirts, socks.

They’re all clothes, aren’t they?

Technically, yes.

But the washing machine has other ideas.

The first commandment of laundry is very simple:

at the very least, separate lights, darks and colours that might run.

Because that new red sweatshirt mixed in with your white T-shirts could launch an entire collection of pink tops you never actually planned to buy.

Second mistake: “The more detergent I use, the cleaner it gets”

Apparently flawless logic.

Except it isn’t.

Too much detergent may not rinse out properly, can leave residue on fabrics and doesn’t necessarily mean cleaner clothes.

So put that bottle down.

You’re not making a cocktail.

Follow the recommended dosage and take both the size of the load and the hardness of your water into account.

And if your main problem is towels that seem to have lost their softness and fragrance after just a few washes, we’ve dedicated an entire article to exactly that:

Third mistake: packing the washing machine like a Ryanair suitcase

Still got a centimetre of space?

Then the towel will fit too.

Push.

A little harder.

Perfect.

Except that your laundry needs room to move around in the drum if you want it to wash properly.

An overloaded washing machine may wash and rinse less effectively.

So that sweatshirt you’re currently trying to force in with both hands?

Maybe it can wait until the next load.

Fourth mistake: completely ignoring the care labels

30°.

40°.

A hand in a washbasin.

A triangle.

A square with a circle.

At first, they look like hieroglyphics left behind by some ancient civilisation.

In reality, those little symbols could save you from pulling your favourite jumper out of the washing machine in a size perfectly suited to a six-year-old.

Before washing something new or delicate, take a quick look at the care label.

Thirty seconds well spent.

Fifth mistake: “I’ll hang it out later”

The washing machine has finished.

Beep.

You’re on the sofa.

“Five minutes.”

Two hours later, you’re still on the sofa.

The next morning, you open the washing machine door.

And there it is, that wonderful smell of…

damp cellar.

Wet laundry left in the drum for too long can develop unpleasant odours.

So one of the most important rules of adult life is:

when the washing machine finishes, take the laundry out.

Yes, even if your series has just got to the best bit.

Sixth mistake: thinking “clean” automatically means “fragrant”

And now we’ve reached the advanced level.

You’ve separated the colours.

You’ve chosen the right programme.

You haven’t poured in half a litre of detergent.

You’ve even hung everything out straight away.

Congratulations.

Now we can talk about fragrance.

Because properly washed laundry is clean, but the fragrance you choose to leave on it is another matter entirely.

In fact, here’s something you might not expect: clean itself doesn’t actually have a smell.

We explored the story behind it here:

And this is where the Le Essenze di Elda Laundry Fragrances come in.

They give fabrics a distinctive, long-lasting fragrance, turning something as unavoidably everyday as doing the laundry into a small pleasure.

If you’re just getting started and have absolutely no idea where to begin, you could try Essenza di Diamante, one of the great classics of the collection, or simply explore the different fragrances and discover which one feels most like you.

Because when you finally open your wardrobe and recognise that fragrance, you realise you might actually be getting rather good at this.

Or at least no one needs to know how long it took you.

PRO level: making even the things you can’t wash every three days smell good

Sofas, curtains, cushions, jackets, soft furnishings.

You can hardly put your entire home in the washing machine.

That’s where the Le Essenze di Elda Fabric Sprays come in, designed to bring fragrance to fabrics that aren’t washed all the time.

And if you’ve found a fragrance you particularly love, you can keep the same scent throughout your home. For example, Diamante & Ylang-Ylang Fabric Spray can be used on curtains, cushions, sofas, bedspreads and clothes.

Then there are wardrobes, drawers, shoe cupboards, bags and suitcases.

And this is where you can quite literally play the fragrance card with the Scented Cards.

Because being single means being independent.

It doesn’t mean your home has to smell like a changing room.

What if the washing machine isn’t even yours?

That’s another possibility.

First flat, student accommodation, apartment building: you might be sharing the washing machine with other people.

And that takes the difficulty level up a notch.

Residues from other people’s detergents, different fragrances and machines that are constantly in use can all affect the result.

We’ve dedicated a guide to this too:

Because living on your own is already an adventure.

Sharing a washing machine with eight strangers is the next level.

What if your first wash was a disaster?

Welcome to the club.

A shrunken T-shirt, a mysteriously missing sock and at least one white item that has turned a completely unexpected colour are practically part of the learning process.

The good news is that you learn quickly.

And after a few washes, you’ll discover something even more dangerous:

you’ll start developing your own preferences.

Your favourite programme.

The right way to fold towels.

And above all…

the fragrance you want to smell when you open your wardrobe.

By that point, you’re no longer a beginner.

You’ve officially entered the world of laundry done exactly the way you like it.

You never forget your first wash. Or the right fragrance.

Discover the world of Le Essenze di Elda for your laundry: Laundry Fragrances, Fabric Sprays, Scented Cards and plenty of little allies to help you survive adult life – with laundry that smells considerably better.

And next time you do a wash, at least remember to take it out of the machine.
